VIJAY CHANDRU, Ph.D

Co-founder and Executive Chairman

Dr. Vijay Chandru (Ph.D., MIT 1982) is an academic entrepreneur recognized as the 'Technology Pioneer' by the World Economic Forum in 2006. His academic career has spanned over two decades at Purdue University and the Indian Institute of Science. Chandru is the recipient of several awards and honors: Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences (1996), MCIT Dewang Mehta Award for Innovation in IT (2001), UGC Hari Om Trust award for "Science and Society" (2003), the President's Medal of INFORMS in 2006, distinguished Alumni award by the MIT India Program in 2007, and was recognized as the Biospectrum Biotech Entrepreneur of 2007. Chandru was the elected President (2009-2012) of the Association of Biotech Led Enterprises (ABLE), the apex trade body that represents the Indian biotech industry.


RAMESH HARIHARAN, Ph.D

Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Ramesh Hariharan is an academic entrepreneur responsible for the software based technology development and implementation at Strand Life Sciences® (Strand). He is also the chief architect for all of Strand's products, including the award winning AVADIS® platform. He is a recipient of the TR100 Award (2002) of Young Innovators by MIT's Technology Review Magazine and in 2003 received the Global Indus Technovator Award from MIT, instituted to recognize the top 20 Indian technology innovators worldwide. Ramesh is an IIT - Delhi Computer Science alumnus, has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Science, New York University and a postdoctoral degree in Computer Science from the Max Planck Institute, Saarbrücken, Germany. His research interests are in sequence analysis, string algorithms, computational biology, computational geometry and foundations of computing.


KALYANASUNDARAM 'KAS' SUBRAMANIAN, Ph.D

Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Kalyanasundaram, popularly known as 'Kas', leads Strand's scientific and technical programs and coordinates the cross-divisional efforts in R&D. Kas's interests lie in the field of ADMET modeling and molecule design using machine learning and systems biology techniques. He has over a decade of experience in modeling biological systems.

An IIT - Bombay alumnus, Kas went on to complete his M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. Equipped with a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, Kas took up the position of Senior Scientist at Genetic Therapy Inc (Novartis) between 1997-2000, where he helped set-up a group to perform research in synthetic and hybrid vectors for gene delivery. Prior to Strand, Kas headed the Collaborative R&D group for immunology products at Entelos.


THIRU P. REDDY, MS

Chief Financial Officer

Thiru P. Reddy joined Strand in 2003. Thiru heads the finance and corporate administration responsibilties for the Strand companies. Mr. Reddy has over 18 years of experience in design and launch of scientific products for life sciences and healthcare markets, globally. Thiru has played multiple roles at various stages of development of Strand’s businesses.

Prior to Strand, he worked at Incyte Corp., where he project managed biological information management systems and was involved in the design & development of their flagship genomics software products. He also worked on developing a LIMS system for the biotechnology division at Bayer Corp. Thiru has a Bachelor’s degree in engineering from Osmania University College of Engineering, Hyderabad, and an M.S. in Engineering from West Virginia University, Morgantown.


SUDHIR BORGONHA, MBBS, MD, SM (MBA)

Sr. VP and Medical Director

Dr. Sudhir Borgonha joined Strand in early 2015 to lead the targeted therapy business. His efforts include developing the nascent genomic testing market for oncology and rare diseases in India, enabling physicians to adopt genomic testing in clinical practice, and help setting up the guidelines for personalised medical care.

Dr. Sudhir Borgonha is a graduate of St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore and the Sloan School of Management, MIT. He has held senior positions in Industry serving as the Global Medical Director at Martindale Pharma and Embrace Innovations, and as the CEO at Triesta Sciences and Translational Medicine, Inc.
Prior to joining industry he worked as a scientist at the Harvard-MIT Clinical Research Centre.

VAMSI VEERAMACHANENI, Ph.D

Vice President, Bioinformatics

Vamsi joined Strand in 2004. His specialities include computational biology, bioinformatics, data mining, text-mining, pathway analysis, and genomics. Vamsi guided the development of the NGS analysis and clinical genomics interpretation and reporting software platforms used in research and clinical labs worldwide. Prior to Strand, Vamsi worked as a Research Associate in evolutionary genomics at the Department of Biology, Penn State University. Vamsi completed his Bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology – Kanpur, followed by a Master’s in Computer Science from Iowa State University. He earned his Ph.D in Computer Science from Penn State University for work on genome assembly algorithms.


ROHIT GUPTA, Ph.D

Senior Specialist, Bioinformatics

Dr. Rohit Gupta has over 10 years of research experience in applying data mining / estimation / predictive models to scientific and commercial domains, including computational biology, medical and healthcare informatics. Rohit has a Ph.D in Computer Science and Engineering from University of Minnesota and has experience working as research collaborator at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and as computational biologist at Genentech. At Strand, he is working on research and product development in computational biology and clinical application of Genomics.


PRAMILA TATA, Ph.D

Director, Life Sciences

Pramila has been with Strand Life Sciences since 2006 and leads the application science team that ensures the scientific validity of GeneSpring, a high throughput omics data analysis software. She is involved in all other aspects of product development and marketing as well, including training of technical support teams, field application scientists and generating marketing collateral. Pramila is also involved in collaborative research with various groups nationally and internationally.

She earned her Ph.D from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Prior to joining Strand she was with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at Seattle working on cancer biology.


SONALI DAS, Ph.D

Director, Life Sciences

Sonali is the lead scientist in Strand's R & D project on building a liver toxicity prediction (Heptox) platform using systems biology approach. With over 9 years of experience at Strand, she coordinates between the wet lab activity and in silico model development of the Heptox platform. During her association with Strand, she has been the principal scientist in a Department of Biotechnology (Govt. of India) funded project as well as in various overseas client- based projects dealing with the liver toxicity prediction. She has presented a number of seminars in various international conferences. Prior to joining Strand, she spent 6 years for her post doctoral research work at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. She has a PhD in biochemistry and cell biology from Bose Institute, Kolkata. She published several original research articles and invited reviews in reputed international Journals.


SUJAYA SRINIVASAN, MS

Senior Bioinformatics Specialist

Sujaya joined Strand in 2013 after working for nearly a decade in various software roles at Intel Corporation in California. She subsequently worked in a cancer research lab at the Indian Institute of Science and as an independent bioinformatics consultant for 3 years. Her current role at Strand includes product definition and management of StrandOmics™, Strand's clinical genomics interpretation software offering. Sujaya has a Master’s in Computer Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park and a Master’s in Bioinformatics from the Johns Hopkins University. Sujaya enjoys working with a multi-disciplinary team of world-class bioinformaticians, software engineers and life scientists, at the cutting edge of the industry. She believes that Strand is a great place to work, with its culture of fostering innovation and dynamism.


SMITA AGRAWAL, Ph.D

Senior Scientist

Smita joined Strand in 2013 with over 13 years of research experience applying analytical methods to biological problems in the fields of neuroscience, stem cell biology, immunology, and genetics. At Strand, she is responsible for analysis of clinical NGS data from the various tests offered by Strand. Prior to Strand, Smita worked in the early discovery research division at Genentech Inc. (a subsidiary of the Roche Group). Smita graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology - Kanpur with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. After that, she attended the University of California, Berkeley and earned her Ph.D degree in Chemical Engineering followed by post-doctoral training in the division of Human Genetics at the University of Minnesota.


NARASIMHA M.K, Ph.D

Director, Life Sciences

Narasimha joined Strand Life Sciences in 2002. His areas of research are clinical biomarkers, cheminformatics, mathematical modelling. He completed his PhD in Computer Science at IISc in 2002. He was a practicing doctor for 16 yrs, his area of research was Computational Geometry.


SOWMYA RAGHAVAN, Ph.D

Senior Scientist

Sowya's basic degree is in chemistry at the bachelor’s level and biochemistry at the Master’s level. Her Ph.D degree is in the field of structural molecular biology, in particular in assigning a cis regulatory role for simple repetitive DNA sequences in genomes of eukaryotes and bacteria. Subsequently, she was a visiting research fellow at the Genome Database, Johns Hopkins University as well as European Bioinformatics Institute, Cambridge where she worked on enhancing the annotations of newly sequenced genomes.

Since 2001, she have been working for Strand Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd. Initially, was involved in the collection of data for building regression models to predict ADME properties. Subsequently, she have been working on various aspects of the development of the Virtual Liver including clinical correlations for model building, knowledge base development for toxicity assessment and assay improvement and optimization.

SHANMUKH KATRAGADDA, Ph.D

Vice President, Software Technology

Shanmukh Katragadda obtained his post-graduate degree in Computer Science from the University of Hyderabad. Later he Worked in the area of neural networks for pattern recognition for his doctorate from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

He then joined Mercedes-Benz Research & Development India (MBRDI) where he was involved in application-oriented research in the areas of automotive safety, and telematics. His work there resulted in patents in the areas of passive sensing for road surface condition detection, and protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks. He also built teams that worked on automotive systems modelling and simulation including model-based function development.

In 2010, he joined Strand Life Sciences, and since then has been involved in the development of Avadis NGS, Strand's solution for the analysis of genomics data which is used by many researchers across the world in various universities and medical research institutes.


MAHESH NAGARAJAN, M Sc

Senior Specialist - Software

Mahesh joined Strand in 2013 and is part of the Strand NGS team. Mahesh has over 15 years of experience in the software industry. Mahesh has worked in varied domains such as bioinformatics, mobile application/framework development, financial trading systems, haptics and computer graphics http://levitrakamagra.net/kamagra/. Mahesh received his Master's in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Science.

Nitin joined Strand in 2005 and is involved in various aspects of product development and delivery. He has completed his M.Tech in CSE from IIT Bombay.

SATISH SANKARAN, Ph.D

Director – Clinical Lab Operations

Satish joined Strand in 2013 with over 11 years of extensive work experience in the fields of cell & cancer biology, and biochemistry. Satish is part of the group involved in the clinical diagnostics laboratory setup, operations, and CAP, CLIA, and NABL compliance. Prior to Strand, Satish worked with Abexome Biosciences Private Limited in the areas of immunological techniques related development of mono & polyclonal antibodies, in vivo, in vitro, and ex vivo assays. Satish earned his Ph.D in Life Sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Later, Satish pursued a five year post-doctoral training program at the Harvard Medical School affiliated hospitals, Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General. Satish’s post-doctoral training involved the discovery of the enzymatic regulation of centrosomal function by the famous tumor suppressor, BRCA1 using a novel assay developed by him. During the course of Satish’s Ph.D and post-doctoral training, he has published his work in peer-reviewed journals such as Molecular and Cell Biology and Cancer Research.


VAIJAYANTI GUPTA, Ph.D

Director – Life Sciences

Vaijayanti has been with Strand for close to a decade as a genomics scientist, working on key projects ranging from genomics products such as GeneSpring®, pharma consulting, and collaborative research with academic groups in India and abroad. Vaijayanti’s group has authored several research publications in peer-reviewed journals such as Cell and PLOS Genetics. Currently, Vaijayanti leads Strand’s translational clinical research team that designs and validates next-generation sequencing and molecular assays for Strand’s clinical diagnostics offering in personalized medicine. Vaijayanti received her Ph.D in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Maryland, College Park, in conjunction with Syngenta’s R&D labs in San Diego, California. Thereafter, she pursued post-doctoral training at the National Institutes of Health, USA in the field of genomics and genetics


BINAY PANDA, Ph.D

Senior Vice President, Molecular Diagnostics & Head,
GANIT Labs

Binay Panda heads the Genomics Applications and Informatics Technology laboratories (GANIT Labs), a public-private partnership effort and directs molecular diagnostics activities at Strand. He has a Ph.D. in Molecular Virology from University of Oxford and was an American Cancer Society postdoctoral fellow at the Scripps Research Institute, USA. Prior to Strand, Binay co-founded a molecular diagnostics startup with focus on early detection of cancer. He has also worked at Affymetrix's US and Japan offices and was instrumental in building the company's operations in Japan. Binay has been a visiting researcher at the University of Tokyo and teaches molecular diagnostics at the University of California, Santa Cruz extension. Binay has research and commercialization interests in genomics, molecular diagnostics and personalized medicine.


PREVEEN RAMAMOORTHY, Ph.D

Global Head of Diagnostics

Preveen heads clinical diagnostics at Strand by developing and supporting personalized medicine partnerships with hospitals in the US and India through genomics-based molecular diagnostics testing and clinical genomics interpretation services through the StrandOmics™ platform. Preveen also serves as the Laboratory Director of the Strand Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine translating genomic biomarkers into molecular diagnostic tests and delivery of these validated tests in a CAP, CLIA and NABL compliant laboratory environment. Prior to joining Strand, Preveen founded and directed the Department of Molecular Diagnostics at National Jewish Health (NJH), a world renowned research and clinical center for respiratory and immune diseases in Denver, USA. Prior to NJH, Preveen worked on developing biologics and vaccines at MedImmune, USA. Preveen trained in genomics and molecular pathology at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and co-invented a breast cancer drug candidate (prolactin receptor antagonist) during his Ph.D from Clemson University. Preveen currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at NJH. Preveen also co-founded the Organization of Rare Diseases India (ORDI). Preveen is passionate about contributing his efforts to India’s healthcare through the innovative development and delivery of affordable molecular diagnostics, which he believes can also be beneficial to developed countries which are experiencing a downward price pressure in molecular diagnostics.

SHUBHA KRISHNA, Ph.D

Director – Life Sciences

Shuba has been with Strand since its inception, except for 4 years in between when she worked at Ingenuity Systems, California developing content for biological pathways and the Ingenuity knowledge base. At Strand, Shuba’s work is primarily focussed in the area of clinical genomics interpretation. Her team is involved in curating an exhaustive knowledge base of genetic variants that expedites the process of interpretation and reporting in sequencing based diagnosis. The team also works on an assortment of other projects that include studying the pharamacogenomics of potential drug targets, elucidating the effects of cosmetics from whole genome transcriptomic data and developing client specified knowledge bases. Shuba obtained her Ph.D from the Bhabha Atomic Research Center, where she studied the immunogenetics of Class II HLA in juvenile diabetes. Her post-doctoral research at the Rutgers University involved understanding the transcriptional regulation of osteopontin and its relation to metastasis.


ASHRAF MANNAN, Ph.D

Director – Medical Genetics

Ashraf joined Strand in 2013 as the Director of Medical Genetics bringing several years of experience in molecular diagnostics. At Strand, Ashraf is involved in interpretation of NGS based panel test data for clinical samples and preparation of molecular genetics reports. Ashraf also participates in pre & post-test genetic counseling session with referring physicians. Prior to joining Strand, Ashraf worked as a Molecular Genetic Analyst and a Principal Investigator in the Molecular Diagnostics Service Unit of the University Medical Center of Gottingen (UMG) in Germany. Ashraf was also a member of the Cluster of Excellence EXC 171 “CNMPB”, commonly referred as “elite institution” in Germany. Ashraf completed his Masters from the Indian Institute of Science and received his Ph.D (summa cum laude) from the German Research Foundation while working on his thesis at the Institute of Human Genetics in UMG. Ashraf has also completed his Habilitation (highest academic qualification for a scholar in Germany) in Molecular Human Genetics from UMG.


URVASHI BAHADUR, Ph.D

Director – Medical Genetics & Genomics

Dr. Bahadur joined Strand in 2013 and is responsible for the clinical genomics effort and maintains the knowledge base required to support the StrandX™ Cancer Genomic Tests. Prior to joining Strand, she worked in the area of metabolic disorders for 3 years as a Lead Scientist at Connexios Life Sciences. Urvashi obtained her Ph.D in Biological Sciences from the Indian Institute of Science, and has a strong interest in the field of cancer biology, in which she worked as a post-doc for 5 years, first at the New York University School of Medicine and then at the Mount Sinai Medical Center.


RUPALI GADKARI, Ph.D

Associate Director, Medical Genetics & Genomics

Rupali joined Strand in November 2013, after about eight years of experience working in academic research. Her interest lies in cancer biology and currently, at Strand she is part of Clinical Genomics efforts. Her work at Strand involves interpretation of NGS based cancer panel test data of clinical samples and molecular genetic report generation for the same. She also help creating the knowledge base required to support Strand Cancer Genomic Tests.

After obtaining her Ph.D degree from IISc, in the field of Protein Biochemistry, she worked at the National centre for biological sciences (NCBS) and the Indian institute of science (IISc), Bangalore as post-doctoral fellow. Later worked as a research scientist at IISc for about three years understanding protein-protein interactions implicated in cancers, using bioinformatics and computational biology tools.


NIMISHA GUPTA, ME

Vice President – Software

Nimisha has been at Strand for over a decade working on products and solutions for genomics and drug discovery research. Nimisha has contributed to several statistical and machine learning algorithms used in Strand’s AVADIS® platform that are now part of market leading products such as GeneSpring® and Mass Profiler Pro. Currently, Nimisha is involved in setting up a text mining based informatics pipeline to facilitate knowledge base curation for clinical interpretation of NGS data. Nimisha also manages the software infrastructure for Strand’s clinical diagnostics laboratory. Nimisha’s interests are to solve computational and user interface challenges in biology and healthcare, as part of which she is involved in the development of a web based platform to share microscopy images and analysis algorithms. Prior to Strand, Nimisha worked in telecom companies such as Hughes Software Systems (Flextronics), InterDigital Communications, and Opuswave Networks. Nimisha received her Master’s in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Science.

HARSHA K RAJASIMHA, Ph.D

Vice President - Business Development

Harsha leads the genomics and bioinformatics services business at Strand USA. Prior to joining Strand, Harsha ran a genomics and bioinformatics services company and co-founded the non-profit Organization for Rare Diseases India (ORDI). He is affiliate faculty at the school of systems biology at George Mason University. He has over a decade of hands-on experience working in multidisciplinary projects involving genomics data infrastructure, analysis, interpretation and publications covering academia, government and industry. His career has spanned Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, National Cancer Institute, National Eye Institute, Food and Drug Administration, Genome Internationdral Corporation and has provided consulting services to various organizations. Harsha’s research work has focused on the modeling and simulation of mitochondrial heteroplasmy, OMIC data integration and integrative systems biology of diseases including cancer, infectious diseases, neuro-muscular diseases, and retinal degenerative diseases. Harsha earned his Baccalaureate in Computer Science and Engineering from the Bangalore University, Master’s in Computer Science from Virginia Tech, and Ph.D in Genetics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from Virginia Tech.


KARISHMA MAINI, MBA

Director – Business Development

Karishma Maini joined Strand in April 2015 as Director for Business Development. She is responsible for business volume and profitability of Strand’s clinical business across India as well as for identifying opportunities for Strand’s clinical business interests in South-East Asia and Middle East markets. Karishma has a Bachelors in Economics Honors from Lady Shriram College, University of Delhi and an MBA from Herguan University in California. Ms. Maini is skilled in creating and implementing short and long term growth strategies. Her core competencies lie in Client Management, Consultative Sales, Strategic Planning and Operations Management.

Prior to Strand, Karishma worked for GE Healthcare for over a decade with her last assignment being that of Program Manager at Stanford University Medical Center in California, USA.


VINAY PARAMASIVAN, PGDIB

Director, Sales

Vinay Paramasivan is designated as Director Sales at Strand. Vinay is a Mechanical Engineer from Government Engineering College, Thrissur, University of Calicut and has a Post Graduate Diploma in International Business. He heads the Sales & Marketing functions of Strand NGS. In this role, Vinay is responsible for Business volume and profitability of Strand NGS apart from taking care of its global marketing. He also oversees the GeneSpring renewal business. Vinay has over 15 years experience in managing Sales, Marketing, Distribution, Business Development, Key Account Management , Technical support which include over 6 years experience in Talent Acquisition, Operations & Project Management. Vinay has worked in revenue generation roles in large Multi Nationals like ManpowerGroup, Kodak & Godrej.

Vinay likes to spend his free time playing soccer, tennis and/or travelling.


JYOTI BAJPAI DIKSHIT, Ph.D

Director – Clinical Business

Jyoti has been at Strand for over a decade and has a breadth of experience ranging from systems biology research to global software sales, marketing, and technical support. Currently, Jyoti is responsible for sales and business development of Strand’s clinical diagnostics tests. Jyoti’s interest is to help clinicians adopt genomics-based diagnostics to understand the genetic basis of diseases and provide personalized treatment for patients. Jyoti completed her Master’s in Physics from Lucknow University with a gold medal, followed by another Master’s in Biotechnology from the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Lucknow. Later, Jyoti went on to earn her Ph.D in Biochemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay. Recently, she completed a certificate course in Executive General Management from the Indian Institute of Management – Bangalore.
